Information about Newfoundland Dogs.

The Newfoundland Dog, also known as the Newf or the Newfie, is a working dog from Newfoundland, Canada. One of the largest of all dog breeds, the Newfoundland has a water-resistant coat and, unusually, webbed feet, which contribute to its considerable swimming capabilities.

The Newfoundland is in the working group of dogs.

If there was a swimming group, the Newfie would undoubtedly be in there because there are few dogs with greater swimming abilities. Equally at home in the water as it is on land, the Newfoundland has a natural life saving instinct, and the stories are legendary of water and sea rescues carried out by Newfoundland dogs.

The Newfoundland dog breed was developed from the original and now extinct St John's Dog, a breed indigenous to the island of Newfoundland. A medium sized dog, the St John's Dog was crossed with Mastiffs introduced by Portuguese fishermen around the 15th Century to produce the much larger Newfoundland dog that we know today.

Despite their size and strength, Newfoundlands are considered amongst the kindest and gentlest of all dog breeds. Not that they don't also make excellent watchdogs since they have an extremely deep bark. But they are not bad tempered by nature, and they are excellent with children and make ideal family pets.

Newfoundlands are easy to train, extremely good natured and loving dogs who thrive exceptionally well in a family environment. But they also possess a keen sense of danger and are capable of independent thinking when it comes to protecting their owners.

Ideal for the active family with plenty of room, Newfoundlands are fun-loving dogs who like plenty of exercise and ideally plenty of opportunity for a swim.
